How Ammolite Jewellery is Created

Have you ever wondered how ammolite jewellery is made? Come behind the scenes with us to learn the process.

The process of creating beautiful ammolite jewellery can be very time-consuming and labour-intensive. The delicate nature of ammolite, being only the thickness of your fingernail, means that most of the work must be done by hand.

The first stage in creating the jewellery is selecting a high-quality raw gemstone. What sets us apart from other ammolite jewellers is that we typically use the whole gemstone and not just flakes of ammolite to create our top-quality jewellery.

Once a raw stone has been selected, it is meticulously cleaned to reveal its beautiful rainbow of colours and unique features. As the ammolite layer is so thin, this process involves using sandpaper to gently remove dirt from the outside and any inclusions.

When all the striking colours of the ammolite are visible, the gemstone is ready to be shaped into one of our freeform jewellery pieces, or to fit one of our sterling silver or gold settings. The stone is cut with the flow of the ammolite to naturally accentuate the colours. The back of the gemstone is then smoothed to a flawless flat surface.

Our gemstone is now perfectly shaped and ready for some finishing touches! There are a few different ways we finish our gemstones at Ammolite Canada. Some are just polished to show off their spectacular colours and left in a natural state. However, when making jewellery pieces, we often add a resin or cap to protect and increase the durability of the ammolite. This means you can wear your favourite jewellery every day without having to worry about damage to the stone.

Many of our pieces have an epoxy resin carefully applied to the surface to add stability to the gemstone and a gorgeous shine. Alternatively, we may add a spinel or quartz cap to the gemstone instead of the resin. This cap is often used in pieces such as rings to stop the claws of the setting damaging the ammolite.

We only use high-quality metals in our jewellery to ensure our pieces are durable and easy to care for. Meticulously crafted gemstones are also available for purchase if you would like your personal jeweller to add them to a different setting.
